WINDSHIELD
CALIBRATION

Windshield calibration is the process of adjusting the memory of cameras and sensors mounted on a vehicle's windshield to ensure its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems function correctly.

TECHNOLOGY

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)

The ADAS is mounted to your windshield. These sensors handle critical safety functions like lane-departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Because even a microscopic shift in the camera's angle can cause these systems to miscalculate distances or miss road markings, calibration is required whenever a windshield is replaced or if the camera is disturbed, ensuring the vehicle's safety features operate with absolute precision.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my windshield need calibration?

Most vehicles made after 2017 are equipped with Driving Assist features. In that case, a calibration will be required after replacing your windshield.

How long does it take to calibrate a windshield?

It can take thirty minutes to an hour depending on the vehicle and calibration method.

What are the different types of calibration?

There are three types of calibration: static, dynamic and dual. It depends on the model of your vehicle (foreign or domestic brands). Trusted Windshields is equipped to perform all of them.

Last time I had my windshield replaced I did not need calibration. Why do I need it now?

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) emphasizes that cameras must be recalibrated after repairs to ensure safety integrity, since failure to calibrate can lead to dangerous consequences.

In December of 2025, the
ADAS Functionality & Integrity Act (H.B. 6688) was introduced in Congress to enforce strict, standardized calibration guidelines.

How much does a windshield replacement cost?

The cost depends entirely on your vehicle's make, model, and year.

As a general rule, vehicles made before 2017 typically do not have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, meaning they do not require safety camera calibration. The final price is based on the specific type of glass your vehicle needs and whether calibration is necessary:

With Calibration: If your vehicle features a forward-facing camera that requires calibration, the total cost typically ranges between
$550 and $700.

Without Calibration: For standard windshield replacements that do not require calibration, the cost generally runs between $300 and $400.

How long before I can drive my car after it's replaced?

Answer: This depends on the Safe Drive-Away Time (SDAT) of the urethane adhesive used to glue the glass down. Modern high-quality adhesives typically require 1 hour to cure before the vehicle is perfectly safe to drive in the event of a crash.

Can my windshield just be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?

If the damage is directly in the driver’s line of sight, near the edge of the glass, or over the safety camera sensor, a full replacement is required for safety.
